Data doesn’t have to be boring.
It’s all in connecting the numbers to human stories. In your reading this week,
you have several examples of how data can be used in different ways to help us
understand who we are.
Please review these stories (links provided)
The fastest-growing group of entrepreneurs in America:
99 Percent Invisible (podcast):
Redrafted (Data visualization):
Then, please look at the following questions, come up withy answers and think about how those answers could apply to the work you do in this class. There's nothing to turn in, but this will help you produce better stories.
How important is the data to telling each of these stories?
Pick one article and analyze how the data was used. How was it
introduced? Is it in one place or woven throughout? Why do you think it was
chosen?
Was data used differently in different stories? If so, how?
Give an example of your favorite use of data in any of the stories
(except the data visualization).
Not all stories are best written out. Sometimes, showing readers
is more effective. Do you think the data visualization example would have
worked as a written story? Why or why not?
Would any of the other stories been better as a data visualization? Why?
What have you learned from these about using data in your
articles?
